Far from being obsolete, magnetic tapes are high-capacity information storage media, used as mass memories. Despite their low reading and writing speeds, they are the preferred solution for data migration, archiving and backup, thanks to their high capacity, reliability and durability.

  • refreshing : migration of data from one information storage medium to another, due to obsolescence or ageing of the source storage medium.
  • data migration: transfer from a hardware system (media migration) or software system (logical migration), requiring data modification to make it compatible with the target system.
  • data normalization or conversion: extraction of data from a source software or system in order to modify its format and convert it into a format compatible with the target software or system.
  • data model: format, volume and structure of data to be migrated; any data cleansing; verification of compatibility and rules to be obeyed.

Step 1 - Consultation and free quote

Our Databack team offers you a free consultation for your data migration project, to help you assess its feasibility and technical requirements. We will draw up a free estimate for you, based on the nature of the transfer, the transition from source to target system, data volume, etc.

Step 2 - Reading source media and auditing

Our team performs a scan of the physical data storage medium to prepare for the data transfer. We determine the current data model (data structure, formats, volume, etc.) and the presence of any errors (missing, erroneous or corrupted data, etc.).

Step 3 - Data conversion if required

At the end of the audit, the constraints inherent in your data migration have been determined, notably linked to the nature of the source medium, its operating system, the format of the data, and so on. Where necessary, Databack converts your data format so that it is compatible with your target system.

Step 4 - Copy data to target media

At the end of the audit, preparation and conversion phases, our team copies and transfers your data from your source physical storage medium to a target physical storage medium (magnetic tape, HDD, SSD, etc.). We then check the integrity and compatibility of your data with this new physical medium and its operating system.

In use since the earliest days of computing, magnetic tapes are still widely used in data storage. Outdated in appearance, but far from obsolete, they far outclass HDDs and SSDs as mass storage devices.

Despite their low reading speed and the impossibility of simultaneous writing operations, the advantages of magnetic tapes lie in their other characteristics:

  • very high storage capacity: by 2022 there will be prototypes with a capacity of 580TB, compared with 8TB for SSDs and 12TB for HDDs;
  • Long service life: LTOs have a service life of 30 years without data degradation, compared with 5 years for HDDs;
  • lower financial cost per gigabyte and lower operating costs than other information storage media;
  • removable cassettes: easy to relocate, store and secure by air gap, physically isolating them from the computer network.

These characteristics make magnetic tapes particularly well-suited:

  • data transfer or migration procedures;
  • long-term data storage and archiving ;
  • full or incremental backup operations.

The need to implement a data migration strategy always comes up in the life of public and private organizations (companies, local authorities, administrations, healthcare establishments...). It is the corollary of any type of change or transition in the data management cycle:

  • restructuring or upgrading information systems ;
  • integration of new applications or software packages ;
  • installation or renewal of storage media ;
  • database merging, creation of a data warehouse ;
  • archiving, full or incremental data backups ;
