Why and how to migrate data?
The need to implement a data migration strategy always comes up in the life of public and private organizations (companies, local authorities, administrations, healthcare establishments…). It is the corollary of any type of change or transition in the data management cycle:
- restructuring or upgrading information systems ;
- integration of new applications or software packages ;
- installation or renewal of storage media ;
- database merging, creation of a data warehouse ;
- archiving, full or incremental data backups ;
- change of activity: merger, conversion, site relocation… ;
- etc.
As a key element of data management, migration must be properly prepared and strategized:
- data model audit and study phase ;
- data cleansing prior to migration ;
- study of source and target media or systems ;
- Migration planning (complete or in phases) ;
- backup of original data before transfer ;
post-migration data auditing, testing and cleansing.
